Exploring the use of pattern as narrative through the process of drawing

All drawings in this section have been developed from initial sketches on Kelly’s trip to Japan, or from the photographs she took that portrayed patterns and narratives in everyday life (some of which are shown in the Research trip to Japan section. Please also see this section for explanation on the meanings of some Japanese patterns).

Many drawing techniques have been explored ranging from quick line sketches, mark making, observational drawings and concentrated studies using a variety of media ranging from pencils, pens, mixed media collage, painting, indigo coal and photoshop.

Kelly researched wabi-sabi and the decorative use of colour used by the Japanese woodblock printers to help create the drawings and patterns- notably colour to organise space and depth (patterning) and block colour to create decorative harmony (composition). Click here to see reference examples by Hiroshige, Kunisada, and works by Mary Cassatt and Pierre Bonnard who were also inspired by these artists. As well as using colour to explore pattern and composition, Kelly paid particular attention to the other principles including repeat, scale and texture.

In her teaching, Kelly continuously encourages and gives creative direction on these drawing processes, techniques, materials and principles expressing their importance in the development of an individual design and range of designs towards a collection in printed textiles. Consequently his knowledge has been transfered directly into drawing and screen-printing workshops as well as tutorials.
